Pak leaders continue to bless terror groups: Rand

Al Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad pose a grave threat to the state and the region as they are deep inside the country

GN Bureau | June 21, 2010

Despite Pakistani government’s tall claims about reining the terror structure in the country, it continues to grow, as its leaders continue to support militancy as a tool of its foreign and domestic policy, says a new US study.

The study done by the prestigious think tank Rand says that a rising number of terror plots in the United States have links to Pakistan. “The militant groups persist in the nation because Pakistani leaders continue to provide support to some groups and have not yet developed an effective counterinsurgency strategy that protects the local population,” the study holds.

According to the report “The country's acquisition of nuclear weapons emboldened its support to militant groups by dampening concerns of retaliation by India,” the report added.

The report added that a number of militant networks-including Al Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad-remain entrenched in Pakistan and poses a grave threat to the state and the region.

The Rand Corporation suggested that the United States should restrict some military assistance to Pakistan until the nation ends its support of militant groups operating on Pakistan soil. It also said that the American strategy is focused too much on carrots and too little on sticks.
