India slips in e-government scores

Falls by six position in UN rankings compared to last year's, but govt website remains regional best

India which was ranked at 113 in the 2008 United Nations e-government survey has fallen by six positions this year. The 2010 survey which was released on Friday by department of economic and social affairs of the United Nations (UN) ranks India at 119.

The report titled leveraging e-government at a time of financial and economic crisis as released by the UN. Republic of Korea takes the top slot on the survey followed by United States and Canada. Other countries in the top ten include UK, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Australia, Spain and France.
India received a dismal score of 0.3567. India’s e-government ranking even falls behind Maldives (92) and Sri Lanka (111). India’s score was even less than the world average of 0.4406. Iran (Rank – 92 / score - 0.4234) and Bangladesh (Rank 102 / score - 0.3028) are the two countries in Southern Asia, which having significantly improved their government development scores and global rankings in 2010 survey.

India’s national portal (http://india.gov.in) is the highest ranking portals in the region with the highest ranking and online services score. It has the most e-services and tools for citizen engagement in the region.

India has been ranked 55 in online services but is at rank 147 in both - the telecommunication infrastructure and human capital sub-indices. In the e-participation sub-index India has been ranked 58.
