Will slain IPS officer Narendra Kumar get justice?

GN Bureau | March 9, 2012

Narendra Kumar, a young IPS officer posted in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, was mowed down by a tractor carrying illegally quarried stones as he tried to stop it. It is being alleged that the killing was at the behest of the mining mafia. The spread of the mining mafia is now almot complete. From Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh in the south to Uttarakhand in the north, from Rajasthan in the west to Orissa in the east — the mining mafia is now virtually too big to be taken down, all thanks to the powerful nexus between criminal miners and politicians and bureaucrats. Thus, there is very little chance that Narendra Kumar will get any justice. From RTI activist Amit Jethwa in Gujarat to Sister Valsa John Malamel in Jharkhand to Chandrika Rai in Madhya Pradesh — many of those who stood up to the mining mafia have been killed and their killers are yet to be brought to justice. The political and executive will to get these murderers to book seems absent. There are many cases of mining muscle becoming political power (remember Karnataka's Reddy brothers?) and bureaucrats becoming willing lieutenants of the mafia (Y Srilakshmi, the Andhra Pradesh IAS officer). Given such a strong nexus, it is unlikely that anyone in the government will act to get justice for Kumar and the others.

Do you think that Narendra Kumar's killers will be brought to book? Is there any chance that he will get justice? Post your thoughts.
