Should ‘man of peace’ be trusted for peace?

GN Bureau | November 11, 2011

India has responded with the announcement of a trade-related confidence-building measure to match Pakistan according the most favoured nation (MFN) status to India. At an hour-long meeting between prime minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani in Addu, Maldives, Singh called Gilani a ‘man of peace’.

However, on the road to peace, India should be moving with extreme caution. Because, when it comes to ties with India, Pakistan is never too far from double standards. While on one hand, it asks India to hang Kasab, it skirts the issue on Hafiz Saeed. India has every reason to be cautious as the recent bonhomie might well have been prompted by frequent raps by Uncle Sam on Pakistan’s unwillingness to deal with terror effectively. While the recent cosying-up is earning praise for Pakistan in the diplomatic circles, can our neighbour be trusted unless it does something about terror camps on its soil?
