While the Congress-led UPA would say India has never been a weak state, the BJP and other opposition parties on the right have always accused the Manmohan Singh government of being “weak”. Is the government finally turning the corner, having hanged 2008 Mumbai terror attack convict Ajmal Kasab late last year and now 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru — both in an extremely secretive manner? Both hanging, incidentally, comes within months of veteran Congressman and the party’s man for all season, Pranab Mukherjee, taking over as the president of the country. The BJP, meanwhile, has said the ruling coalition's weakness is apparent from the very fact the hanging took place nearly a decade after the Parliament attack. It should have come much earlier, the main opposition contends.
