‘Mr Abhijit Kherjee, keep your Mu silent’

At times, what are politicians for if not to provide fodder for a daily dose of mirth and musing? Welcome today’s benefactor then, ladies and gentlemen: Abhijit Mukherjee, a.k.a. Member of Parliament from Jangipur in West Bengal and better known as President Pranab Mukherjee’s son.

No sooner had he made that eloquent comment today than the twitteratti took the attack straight to the MP-quarter doors.

For us, the top scorer’s award goes to @babumoshoy, who tweeted, “Abhijeet Mukherjee is pronounced Abhijeet Kherjee. Mu should be silent,” which aptly describes what many women and men want our politicians to do — keep their mouths shut.

@FakingNews tweeted “Dinosaurs died due to excessive make up: Abhijit Mukherjee”, describing his absurd and dated thoughts, which, interestingly, still find resonance in many of fellow politicians.

Probably Mukherjee’s comments will be his only claim to fame, at least for some time to come, and that he is the current President’s son. @SandipGhose tweeted “At least 'dented - painted' got Abhijit Mukherjee trending -something he could otherwise never expect even in a lifetime's political career.”

@SamitBasu vented at the irony of the remarks: “The dentedpainteds I know are using high-quality apple cider vinegar to fend off tear gas and making sure they don't litter during protests.”

@Over_rated said, “Abhijit Mukherjee might have been a student once upon a time but it doesn't seem like he got an education.”

@suhelseth’s tweets showed the dismal state of affairs in the President’s office — term after term: “Pranab's son makes both Pratibha Patil AND her son, look intelligent! No mean feat!”

Indicating that Mukherjee has lost his mind, @GabbarSingh tweeted “Abhijit Mukherjee has stumbled upon the high quality naswar Pratibha patil hid in the Rashtrapati bhavan.”

@PJtalking said, “Abhijit Mukherjee just portrayed how dented and painted the parliament is, towards woman.”

@sachin_joshi32 tweeted, “Uncles like Abhijit Mukherjee shouldn't b allowed to roam after 8 pm so that women in the place where they live should feel safe.”

Finally, @geetiga tweeted what hit home, perfectly: “We are making a fuss of Abhijit Mukherjee's remarks because he is President's son. There'd be many men who think like him and are commoners.”

Okay, and this comes as a bonus — just for pure and unadulterated fun: “Mithunda to Abhijit Mukherjee-I AM DISCO DANCER..koi Problem?” That came from @iamnarendranath, by the way.

Mukherjee junior has illustrious company, though. His remark comes soon after fellow Congress MP from Mumbai Sanjay Nirupam called BJP’s Smriti Iraani “nachaniya”, followed by Andhra Pradesh Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana’s remark that the south Delhi gangrape victim should have been more careful than be out at night.

That politicians should not put their wits to such use, and put their foot where their mouth is, is an old story. We say, if you have a response to Mukherjee’s remarks, shoot off straight on his email — abhijitmukherjeegk2@gmail.com, as tweeted by @nilanjanaroy.

Then again, his inbox might be full by now, considering this information was tweeted over an hour ago.
