Rural housing takes a beating, only 50% target achieved

Against target of 40.52 lakh house, only 21.18 lakhs built

Indira Awas Yojna (IAY), one of flagship schemes under ruler development ministry, aimed at building house for the poor has not been doing well with only 50% of the target achieved during 2009-10 (till January).

According to the figures submitted by the states to the RD ministry, against the target of construction of 40.52 lakh IAY houses,  21.18 lakh houses have been constructed so far.

Also out of total fund of Rs. 14776.15 crore available for IAY, only Rs. 10223.98 crore has been utilized

Some of the states that have come close to meeting the annual target are Karnataka (75.40%), Mizoram (73.09%), Nagaland (72.15%), Tamil Nadu (62.98%) and Andhra Pradesh (67.49%).

States that have reached the half the target are  Assam (49.05%), Bihar (49.43%), Goa (51.20%), Gujarat (55.46%), Haryana (55.10%), Himachal Pradesh (59.60%), Jharkhand (48.47%), Kerala (42.82%), Madhya Pradesh (53.40%), Maharashtra (44.39%), Punjab (56.62%), Rajasthan (58.24%), Sikkim (55.77%), Uttar Pradesh (56.30%), Uttarakhand (49.80%) and West Bengal (54.51%).
