Rs 350 crore project to clean up hazardous waste dumpsites

85 percent of the funds will be from the World Bank and 15 percent from the central and state governments

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved an Rs 350 crore project to clean up two hazardous waste/ municipal solid waste dumpsites in Andhra Pradesh and eight hazardous waste/ municipal solid waste dumpsites in West Bengal.

The decision was taken in a meeting on 19th March. 85 percent of the funds will be from the World Bank and 15 percent from the central and state governments.

The sites were selected after a diagnostic study of contaminated legacy sites carried out by the Central Pollution Control Board and based on responses received from the state pollution control boards.  

The project will be implemented over the next four-five years. A detailed national plan for remediation and rehabilitation of highly polluted, abandoned, contaminated legacy hazardous waste/ municipal dump sites numbering over 140 will be prepared based on the experience of these two states.

India generates around 6.2 million tonnes of hazardous waste annually of which roughly 3.5 million tonnes is recyclable.
