Rice at Rs 2/kg for Kerala's unorganised sector

Beneficiaries could be up to 3.5 million families

The LDF Government in Kerala today decided to bring workers in the unorganised sector under the ambit of its Rs 2/kg rice scheme.

With this, the total number of families to benefit from the highly subsidised foodgrain scheme would go up to 3.5 million, chief minister V S Achuthanandan told reporters after a state cabinet meeting.

Workers in several other categories had already been included in the scheme.

This decision would mean that nearly half of the seven million ration card holders in the state would benefit from the programme.
