Girls from outside Delhi, seeking admission into city colleges, are redrafting their wishlists based on the availability of the hostel accommodation.

Kajeng W from Manipur completed class 12 under Andhra board of secondary education in Hyderabad. With a score of 94 percent, Kajeng made it to Hans Raj college's BSc(Physics) under the OBC quota. However, the joy of landing the college and course of her choice ebbed rather quickly.

Hans Raj only has a boy’s hostel. So, Kajeng had to give up her admission and look elsewhere. Fortunately, she has has also been accepted at Sri Venkateswara - on the first list admissions for the open category.

Kajeng said, “If I was upto me I would have taken admission in Hans Raj and managed something about my stay. But my father will never let me live all alone.”

Kajeng’s father backed his daughter’s statement and said, “We come from very far. And I am very tensed about my daughter living alone in this city. Delhi is good for education but not good for girls. It is better for her to stay in a hostel as it will have a warden, rules and regulations, timings to come back, so I will be relaxed.”

So is the case with Nijling from Vizag who made it to Lady Shri Ram (LSR) for Bcom (Hons) in the second list admissions with 96.5 percent. As a backup during first list admissions, she took up a seat at Miranda House hoping to switch later. But now, even though she has a LSR offer, there is no hostel accommodation for her at the college.

Nijling said, “Just because the hostel is not vacant for me, I have to stick to a college I don’t want to. Miranda is a good college but I wanted to study in LSR. So only for the security of staying in a hostel I will have to take up my second option.”

Lippi from Assam is familiar with the plight. She couldn't get into Miranda, her first preference because hostel accommodation was up. She has to stick to Indraprastha now.

Lippi said, “Miranda House filled most of its courses in the first list itself, to such an extent that the hostel does not have accomodation for girls who make it in the remaining courses in the second list. So I now have to study in an off-campus college.”

However, Lippi's mother is happy with the arrangement. "On campus or off campus, in my opinion all colleges are good in Delhi University. I am only happy about her staying in the girl's hostel," she said.
