Mobile veggie vending in J&K

State-run body is now vegetable-hawkers' competition

PTI | May 14, 2010

All the veggie freaks, who dislike spending hours bargaining and looking for fresh greens in the mandi, have a reason to smile, as J K Agro Industries today started a mobile vegetable outlet for door-to-door supply.

The endeavour is meant to provide better marketing facilities to the vegetable growers and ensure availability of fresh vegetables on reasonable rates to the consumers.

Minister for agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir, who inaugurated the outlet, said that the main objective for launching the pilot scheme is to safeguard the interest of growers and consumers and boost the agriculture activities, which possess great employment opportunities for job seekers.

The Agro Industries will pick up fresh vegetables from Narkara vegetable growers of Budgam and supply it to the consumers of the colonies of Hyderpora, Peerbagh, Airport colony and Barzulla at their door step in the first phase, added Mir.

After its success it would be expanded to other colonies of the city, he said, adding that the vegetable growers of other areas would also be covered under this scheme.

The minister asked the vegetable growers to avoid middlemen for the success of the scheme, as it will provide them better dividends in the future.
