Ruckus over 'proposal' to renovate Mantralaya under the slum rehabilitation act

Maharashtra legislative assembly witnessed uproarious scenes resulting in two adjournments on Tuesday when the Opposition Shiv Sena-BJP demanded a statement from chief minister Ashok Chavan over the Mantralaya makeover project.

Leader of opposition Eknath Khadse raised the issue after the Question Hour saying that Chavan had misled the House yesterday during his reply on the debate of budgetary provisions of the urban development department.

Khadse said as per the details received under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the PWD department had sent a proposal to the Union ministry of environment that it wants to modernise and upgrade Mantralaya, seat of the state government under the provisions of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme so that it can get additional FSI.

Yesterday, Chavan had categorically stated that his government has not taken any decision on the proposed Mantralaya makeover project.

He had said that there are another means to get additional FSI. "Developing Mantralaya under SRA scheme is laughable," Chavan had said.

Khadse demanded strong action against the officials who prepared the proposal of classifying Mantralaya as a slum and redeveloping it under the SRA scheme.

"We have the proposal with us obtained through the RTI Act," he said.

Public Works Department (PWD) is headed by deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal.

However, when Khadse and other opposition members raised the issue again today, Chavan was present in the House.

When he got up to leave, Khadse and others objected and said they wanted the chief minister to reply.

The opposition MLAs gathered in the well of the House and shouted slogans. As a result, the House had to be adjourned first for 10 minutes and then for 20 minutes.

When the House re-assembled for the third time, power Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar said that a statement on the issue would be made on the following day.
