Govt allows prosecution of 70 bureaucrats in four years in corruption cases

Charges range from reviving health schemes based on forged documents to possessing dispropotionate assets

DoPT sanctioned the prosecution of 70 IAS officers under prevention of corruption act, in the last four yeaIn the last last four years, the Department of Personnel and Training gave the go- ahead for the prosecution of 70 IAS officers under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988

Investigative agencies in these include the CBI and state vigilance and police.

In the year 2006, the DoPT sacntioned the prosecution of seven IAS officers under the prevention of corruption act for charges including abuse of official position, illegal gratification and dispropotionate assets

While the prosecution of 13 officers was remitted by tge department in in the year 2007, the figure for 2008, is ten.

Highest  number of such cases, 32, were given the go- ahead in 2009 for charges of favouring private builders in grant of loan from Orissa Rural Housing Development Corporation (ORHDC). The same year saw 19 officers facing charges of reviving various central government health schemes based on forged documents.

The DoPT had sanctioned the prosection of as many as 8 IAS officers till February this year.

The CBI is the investigating agency in 44, out of the total 70 cases.
