Committee to probe MCI scandal

To examine the validity of recommendation made by MCI

GN Bureau | April 26, 2010

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday constituted a three-member committee to probe irregularities committed by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The committee will examine the validity of the recommendation made by the MCI on April 22, 2010, renewing permission to the medical college, Gyan Sagar Medical College in Punjab, to take students for the next batch in 2010-11 without taking into account the objections raised by the inspection committee.

The committee will be headed by K. Desiraju, Additional Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department. It will also have Rani Kumar, dean of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and a senior officer of the Directorate-General of Health Services (DGHS) as its other members and it has been directed to submit its report within a week.

The ministry initiated action in the light of the arrest of MCI president Ketan Desai and three others by the CBI on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs.2 crore from a middleman for granting the alleged favour to the college concerned. The CBI has registered cases under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Azad also called for a report from the CBI for more facts to take further action accordingly.
