BJP concerned over Manipur situation

Three-member fact-finding team to visit state

GN Bureau | May 11, 2010

The Bhartiya Janata Party is concerned over the explosive situation in Manipur due to an economic blockade by some Naga outfits that have also given an ultimatum to non-Manipuri people to leave the state by May 31.

Unless the centre acts decisively, the situation will spill out of hand, party president Nitin Gadkari warned while deputing a three-member team to visit Imphal on Thursday for an on-the-spot study of the situation.

The team of spokespersons Prakash Javadekar and Tarun Vijay and Assam MP Bijoya Chakravarty will discuss the situation with civil society activists, party workers, other party leaders, NGOs and experts besides police and government officials.

On return the next day, the team will submit its findings to Gadkari and will also meet Home Minister P Chidambaram to share their views on the volatile situation, a BJP press release said.

It said the economic blockade has already caused shortages and spiralling prices while the permission given by the centre to Naga leader Muivah to visit his hometown in Manipur has already resulted in two deaths and total bandh.

Misuse of security forces resulting in extortion and fake encounters have infuriated people in Manipur, the release said, pointing out that many militant outfits are training their cadres and taking shelter in Bangladesh.
