Operations against militants, including the ULFA, would continue until they gave an assurance to abjure violence in the state, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said today.

"There are reports of the ULFA and other militant outfits recruiting cadre and thus operations cannot stop. Yes if they (ultras) give us assurance that they will abjure violence then we may think of halting operations," Gogoi said.

"At the moment we are convinced not to halt operations particularly in view of the ULFA 'Raising Day' today," Gogi told reporters.

Asked whether the government was contemplating a ceasefire during the ensuing Bihu festival, he said that the operations would continue.

The ULFA was raised this day in 1979 at the historic Ranghar in upper Assam's Sibsagar district.
