PTI | June 9, 2010

Several voluntary outfits including CPM (ML) Liberation and district Kishan Sabha staged a dharna in front of the East Godavari District Collectorate in Kakinada city protesting the auction of liquor shops.

The organisations took out a rally led by The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) district unit president R Ratnakumar and burnt liquor effigies.

Police cane charged protesters and 13 AIDWA women activists were detained yesterday.

CPM (ML) Liberation district Secretary B B Raju and AICTTU State President Ch Nageswara Rao condemned action against AIDWA activists and alleged that government had not taken any action against spurious liquor manufacturers and is now organising liquor auctions.

They alleged that the Congress had promised in the general elections that they will introduce total prohibition in a phased manner in the state but have not kept their word.
