Zapak to increase number of gaming cafes to 200 in three years

Indian gaming industry to reach Rs 31.9 billion by 2014

PTI | June 5, 2010

Reliance ADAG's gaming arm, Zapak Digital Entertainment, today said it plans to increase the number of its gaming cafes to 200 over the next three years as the gaming trend catches on in the country.

"Gaming is now catching on and youngsters are hooked onto their games, be it online, console, handhelds or on mobile phones... We expect the number of Zapak Gameplexes to touch 200 over the next three years from the present 87," Zapak Chief Operating Officer Arun Mehra told reporters here.

The company will target the top 30 cities for its cafes, dubbed 'Zapak Gameplexes', he added.

Asked about the investment, Mehra declined to comment.

Zapak's model involves a mix of company-owned and franchise cafes for its gaming zones.

The Anil Ambani-led firm has about seven million registered users. The website has more than 650 games on its website.

According to a Ficci-KPMG study, the Indian gaming industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 32 per cent between 2009 and 2014 to reach Rs 31.9 billion by 2014.

The growth will be driven by factors like a young population, rising disposable incomes and increasing PC and wireless devices penetration in India, the report added.

Zapak also announced its partnership with Gillette to host the second edition of the 'Gillette Mach3 India Gaming Championship (IGC)'.

Zapak and Gillette expect more than two million users from across 34 cities to take part in the online gaming championship.
