Indian Registration Act amended by Maha to facilitate e-stamping

PTI | August 2, 2010

Stamp duty payment in Maharashtra will be much easier with the state government approving a Bill of online registrations, official sources said today.

The amendments on these regards were made in the Indian Registration Act, 1908, and was passed by the state Legislative Council recently.

The amended Act would be sent to the Centre for final approval.

With the amendments, people would be able to do online registrations to any stamps and registration office.

A property buyer can also scan documents at home and send it to the registrar who can conduct an enquiry before registering the documents, an official from the Revenue Department said.

An e-receipt will be sent to the person after deducting the stamp and registration charges. The government will also provide nationalised and co-operative banks with the power to register leave and licence agreements, he said.

Considering burden on registrars in registering agreements relating to deposit of title deed, sale certificate and irrevocable power of Attorney relating to transfer of immovable property, the stamp duty offices will work in two shifts, he said.

These documents would be compulsorily registered with the said amendments, the official added.
