School students in Kerala to get UID number

Pilot in two schools to be launched next month

PTI | September 15, 2010

All the over 60 lakh students in Kerala will get Unique Identity Number during the current academic year as part of Unique Identification Authority (UIDAI) initiative.

The scheme, being put in practise with the help of 'IT @ School' project, will pilot this in two schools in the next month, Project Director K Anvar Sadath told PTI here.

Kerala will become the first state in the country with all the students having "Aadhaar number", a 12-digit UID, he said.

Nearly 12,000 schools in the state would be considered for this drive. The project will deploy its School Management System to capture necessary details, he said.

"Though the 'Aadhaar' demands information on name, gender, date of birth, address as mandatory Know Your Residence (KYR) details, we will also be collecting data like class name, admission number from the students," he said.

IT@School plans to complete the enrolment process for all students before March next.

"We are also trying to give physical identity cards with photographs to all students along with this, even though it is not a part of UIDAI project", he added.
