RCom says will be among the early launchers of 3G services

Tata Teleservices to launch before November 8

Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications (RCom) today said it would be amongst the first private operators to launch next generation 3G service offerings "very soon".

"We are not going to wait for the other operators' launch and then position ourselves ... ours will be among the early launches and it will be very soon," the company's Chief Executive, Akshay Kumar, told reporters here without giving an exact date.

RCOM's rival Tata Teleservices has already announced that its launch would be before November 8.

3G is expected to revolutionise the country's telecom scene by offering real-time data downloads and also help revive the sagging fortunes of telecom companies.

On the crucial issue of pricing its 3G services, Kumar said RCom's price-points will definitely be in keeping with competition. He also parried questions about the commercial feasibility of rates currently offered by state-run mobile operators.

RCom, which has secured 3G licence for 13 of the 22 circles, is in talks with other operators for partnerships for giving services in the uncovered regions, he said, adding the average revenue per user will increase post-the 3G launch.

The Government had raised a whopping Rs 65,000-crore by auctioning 3G spectrum to private operators in May this year.

State-run operators BSNL and MTNL have already been offering 3G services to customers while none of the private operators have launched its services as of now.

Last month, RCoM had demonstrated its 3G service at the company's annual general meeting but its commercial launch is yet to take place.
