In a bid to strengthen the public distribution system (PDS) in the state, the Orissa government today introduced multi-model biometric ration card on a pilot basis in Rayagada district.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the new model, which was developed by United Nation World Food Programme (UNWFP), that will be implemented by the food and civil supplies and consumer welfare department.

More than 2,10,538 families in 11 blocks of the district and 32,373 families in 3 urban areas would benefit from the new age cards.

"This model is being implemented on pilot basis and likely to be extended to other districts in the state," Patnaik said.

A survey was conducted seven years ago following which fingerprints and photographs of eyes were taken from the beneficiaries of the scheme, an official said.

During his visit to this tribal dominated district, Patnaik also laid foundation stone for Ranchi-Vijayawada four-lane highway near Amalavata junction.
