PTI | August 25, 2010

Telecom vendor Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) today said it has bagged a contract from Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL) for setting up infrastructure to help the telco roll-out 3G services.

TTSL has selected NSN technology to support the launch of 3G services, which will allow the operator to offer mobile broadband and better quality voice calls, NSN said in a statement.

However, no financial details were divulged.

"There is huge demand for mobile Internet access in India and that is what 3G brings. We want to move quickly, which is why we're the first to secure our key 3G technology and services supplier," TTSL Chief Technology Officer and President (Enterprise Business) A G Rao said.

Under the scope of the contract, NSN will supply its LTE-ready Flexi Multiradio Base Stations. It will also provide network implementation and managed services.

"We are committed to a rapid roll-out of TTSL's network.

This deployment embeds the latest mobile technology in the TTSL network, preparing it for future demand," NSN Head (India Region) Urs Pennanen said.

TTSL had won licenses across nine circles -- Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP (West), Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab and Haryana -- for offering 3G services. It paid Rs 5,864.29 crore to the government for the spectrum.

The auction for 3G spectrum has helped the Indian government garner Rs 67,710 crore in revenue.
