Encourages IT firms to focus on backward regions of the state

In a bid to attract more investment in the Information Technology (IT) sector and to remain competitive, there was a need to review the IT policy of the state government every year, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said Friday.

"The IT industry in Maharashtra is growing at the rate of 24 per cent, which is more than any other sector. This is the only industry which can generate large employment, apart from attracting investments," Chavan said during a function here today.

"To remain competitive, there is a need to review the IT policy every year. New avenues should be explored so that the industry thrives and grows," he said.

Highlighting huge potential for the sector in the state, Chavan said that the Government would provide all the necessary assistance to the sector.

"Enough potential exists in the state for the growth of IT sector. The IT companies need to tap this potential.

From the Government side, we would provide the necessary assistance and the IT policy is a step towards it," he said.

The sector should give a focus to the backward regions of the State for setting up new projects, he said, adding the IT companies should also focus on developing Marathi fonts.

"Marathi is used in most of the Government and semi-Government organisations. We want to give Marathi language a global recognition. IT companies can help us in doing so by developing Marathi fonts," he said.
