MTNL to provide 3G, Wi-Fi services to JNU

State telecom to offer services at Rs 199/month

PTI | June 26, 2010

State-run telecom operator MTNL today signed an agreement with the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to provide 3G and Wi-Fi -- high-speed Internet access -- services in the campus area.

Under the agreement, students of the university would be able to access the Internet using the MTNL 3G network for Rs 199 per month, instead of the usual fee of Rs 599.

"JNU is a premier institute in the country and MTNL has offered ... students of the university access to the Local Area Network (LAN) of JNU using MTNL 3G network," Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot told reporters here.

MTNL would provide Wi-Fi connectivity to the college campus, including its hostels, at its own cost, he added.

The total project would cost MTNL about Rs 4 crore.

The state-run telco has set up four additional 3G towers on the campus to ensure good coverage and service quality.

MTNL users in JNU would also be able to make free calls to each other soon, he added.
