Maharashtra government is considering bringing an Act to ban pornographic websites in the state against the backdrop of an Army official caught for uploading obscene clippings of children on the net.

"We are considering bringing an Act to ban pornographic websites. We would also request the Centre to amend the existing Acts for strict actions against the culprits," Minister of State for Home, Ramesh Bagwe informed the Legislative Council today.

The suggestion came from Congress MLC Rajendra Mulak and the minister agreed to it.

The Home Department has also started internet patrolling in the cyber cafes and policemen have been trained to deal with cyber crime cases, Bagwe said.

Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe asked if the government is following guidelines led by Justice Mrudula Bhatkar while dealing with a case of child pornography, to which the minister replied in the affirmative.

An Army official was arrested from south Mumbai in May for uploading obscene clips of children on the internet.

The Government has contacted the website to remove the clippings, the minister added.
