IT@School project, an initiative by Kerala government to impart IT education in schools, has developed a Resource DVD, to be distributed among 60,000 high school teachers in the state.

The Resource DVD, considered to be first of its kind in India, will ensure a complete Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enabled educational system, IT@School Project Executive Director K Anvar Sadath told PTI here.

The DVD comprises of various tools, software and features which were in line with the new ICT syllabus, Sadath said, adding it was developed entirely on free software and could be used in any computer or Laptop.

"Through the release of the Resource DVD to all high school teachers and empowering them with specific ICT skills, it was aimed to implement a complete ICT enabled learning process at all classrooms in the state," Sadath said.

The ICT enabled process which was piloted two years back has become a success, with this year's eighth standard text book being entirely based on ICT enabled education, he said.

The teachers had also been given direction to use this technology while teaching their subjects also, thereby enabling new ICT STD E textbook to be used as a reference book for teachers, he informed.

The teachers would have complete freedom to copy, edit and re-distribute the contents in the Resource DVD.

Some of the special features in the DVD include introduction to office packages, painting software, special features on presentation software, tools for science, mathematics and social science, Sadath said.

It also includes the PDF versions of various textbooks, latest versions of free application softwares.

The Resource DVD with a total capacity of 8 GB would include the contents equivalent to that of 12 CDs. With an inbuilt auto-run facility, the DVD would facilitate the feel of an online software, he added.
