The government would make common toll technology mandatory for car owners across India, Minister for Road Transport and Highways Kamal Nath said today.

"We will implement the common toll technology by the middle of next year and make it mandatory," Nath told reporters on the sidelines of AIMA convention here.

He said that the government was also talking to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers for this.

Nath said that the government had appointed a committee under the UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani, who had suggested this proposal.

On construction of roads, he said that although the target was to construct 20 kilometers of road per day, only 13 kilometer were being done now.

In the current year, nearly 9,000 to 10,000 kilometer would be awarded for construction, compared to 7,500 kilometer last year.

In West Bengal, the ministry had awarded 600 kilometer at a cost of Rs 6,000 crore.
