e-Governance should be part of higher education system which will help in bringing about transparency, speedy decision making and accountability, newly appointed Vice-chancellor of University of Mumbai, Dr Rajan Welukar said today.

During the last 20 years, the electronic storm has changed the entire education system including higher education and "we must use new technologies in education sector not only for teaching and learning but also for e-governance," Welukar said at a panel discussion on 'E-Governance and the future management and technical institutions' held at Welingkar Institute.

Educational authorities should take into consideration the emerging technologies, increasing learners demand, he said adding adding it is important to have enhanced pedagogy and rise in budget in order to raise the standards of higher education in the state and the country.

Quoting the example of the Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt who could break the record by making use of every muscle of his body, Welukar said, if every individual associated with the University of Mumbai works together through e-governance, "we can definitely improve the university's ranking soon."

Dr S S Mantha, acting Chairman (Acting) of All India council for Technical Education and Mahesh Pathak, Secretary  Higher and Technical Education Department of Maharashtra could not attend the discussion.

Dr Udhay Salunke, Group Chairman of Welingkar Institute, kickstarted the discussion.
