Unregistered telemarketing companies sending bulk SMSes under scanner

The Telecom Department and telecom regulator TRAI will together come out with stringent action against unregistered telemarketing companies who send bulk SMSes and make telemarketing calls, Minister of State for Communications & IT Sachin Pilot said today.

"There are a lot of unregistered telemarketing companies sending bulk SMSes and making calls to mobile customers. The Government has taken a serious note of it and will take stringent action against these people," Pilot told reporters here on the sidelines of his visit to the BSE.

"Regulator TRAI and DoT have taken up this matter seriously and stringent action can be expected in a few days," Pilot said.

He said though the misuse is at its peak, less than 10 per cent of the total mobile users have registered in the 'Do Not Call' registry in the country.

"Most of the mobile users haven't registered themselves with this facility," he said.

To avoid call drops, he said that the Ministry has given instructions to all operators to ensure quality of service.

As a huge market with 680-million users with an every- month addition of 16-18-million customers, the mobile device is going to change the lives of people in a big way, Pilot said.
