ITS to give info on availability and timings of buses, metro and cars

Visitors for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games will now be able to plan their itinerary online or over their mobile phones, following the launch of an intelligent transportation system providing information on bus and metro timings in the National Capital Region.

With the launch of Intelligent Transportation Systems and Services (ITS), the availability and timing of buses, metros and cars will be available online and over mobiles.

The ITS was developed jointly by Thetis SpA of Italy, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and auto major Ashok Leyland.

The public transport service will be tested and supervised during the Commonwealth Games, 2010, Thetis India Demonstration Coordinator Paolo Squillante said.

He added, "If the government wants, we could also continue it even after the Games."

The ITS is a part of the STADIUM project being jointly pursued by India and the European Union under the 7th Frame Work Programme of the European Commission.

STADIUM stands for Smart Transport Applications Designed for Large Events with Impacts on Urban Mobility.

"Over 60,000 people, including athletes, referees, media and workforce, would visit the capital during the Games.

Besides, about 1.5 lakh visitors per day would visit here," Anil Chhikara, TCC (Transport), HCF Organising Committee, Commonwealth Games 2010 said.

The ITS would help deliver reliable transport services for relevant customers in a time-efficient and cost-effective manner, he added.

Department of Heavy Industries Joint Secretary Ambuj Sharma said, "I suppose with all the diversities and complexities of our urban infrastructure system, this initiative will deliver results."
