Agrarian Punjab woos Big-3 IT companies

Assures 24 hour power supply to IT units

PTI | September 10, 2010

Punjab today invited IT majors TCS, Infosys and Wipro, among others, to set up shop in the predominantly agrarian state that is seeking to position itself as the 'Best IT destination'.

"Today, I have written to three IT companies - TCS, Wipro and Infosys - to come here and set up their offices in Mohali," State Industries and Commerce Minister Manoranjan Kalia told reporters here today.

The state is offering 25 acres of land in Mohali for allotment to the IT majors. "We have a chunk of 25 acres of land in Mohali that can be given to the IT giants for setting up their base here," he said.

The state, where about 75 per cent of the working population is directly or indirectly linked to agriculture, had earlier offered to allot about 70 acres of land to Wipro and TCS in Mohali in year 2005, but it could not do so because of litigation.

Besides, the state, notorious for power cuts, is also considering to provide 24 hours power supply to IT units that set up base in the upcoming integrated industry park at Rajpura in Patiala.

"We are planning to supply 24 hours of power to IT and software units which come up in Rajpura. We are also in talks with Centre in this regard," he said.

In March this year, the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) had sent out a communication to the industry about a 58-hour compulsory weekly power cut.
