Is homosexuality unnatural?

GN Bureau | February 24, 2012

The poser before the supreme court is to decide if homosexuality is unnatural. The LGBTQ rights activists say it is not citing examples from both human history and natural world around us in which members of many mammalian species (including simians, our closest animal relatives) have exhibited homosexual behaviour. Then, there is our own history to contend with. Graeco-Roman mythology, Hindu mythology, Mayan legends about their gods as well as historical records of the great empires of the world have accounts of homosexuality. This kind of evidence from history would not have existed if it was unnatural or an aberration.

However, the anti-gay rights camp believes that homosexuality is unnatural. The home ministry allegedly held that gay sex was against the Indian social order and then recanted. Over the last few centuries, our society has become a melting pot of beliefs that are rooted in the Victorian society of 18th century England, the Mughal and pre-Mughal times, the Sufi and Bhakti movements among the others. Ever since, homosexuality has truely been pushed to the margins, assumed as unnatural. Now, it is so heavily imbibed in our collective psyche (well, in the psyche of the chunk of the country), that it may not be possible to shed it altogether.

Considering the two arguments and any other you may have, will you say that homosexuality is unnatural? Or that it isn't? Post your thoughts.
