SC cancels all 2G licences, trial court to decide PC's fate

Apex court asks Trai to issue fresh recommendation for 2G licences

GN Bureau | February 2, 2012

In one of the most significant verdicts in the 2G scam case, the supreme court ordered the cancellation of all 122 licences granted to to telecom companies for use of the spectrum. The court also ruled that the decision to prosecute home  minister P Chidambaram, who cleared the allotment of the licences as the finance minister in 2007, will be taken by a trial court within two weeks.

However, in a reprieve to the home minister, it refused to direct the central bureau of investigation (CBI) to probe his role in the scam.

The apex court held that all the licences were granted in a very arbitrary and unconstitional manner and asked telecom regulatory authority of India (Trai) to make fresh recommendation on the grant of 2G licences.
