"No vote consideration when it comes to national security"

Afzal hanging: Tewari articulates govt position

GN Bureau | February 9, 2013

The UPA government does not look at electoral considerations when it comes to national security, said information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari, shortly after JeM terrorist Afzal Guru was hanged on Saturday.

Addressing a press meet in Chennai, he said a narrative was going out that the government had acted with an eye on votes and nothing could be farther from truth.

“The UPA government has never shied away on taking decisions which are tough and in national interest. And whenever we take such decisions we do not keep electoral consideration in mind,” he said.

Tewari said that the UPA government has performed well during its last tenure and aims to complete five year this term as well.

He said UPA has ensured political stability and communal harmony in the country. “There has been no situation like that of 2002 Gujarat riots, when the centre remained helpless,” he added.

Calling the forthcoming budget session as crucial, Tewari said the government hopes to get constructive support from the opposition. "We hope the opposition will rise above narrow political interests," he said.
