“We're all in this together. That's how we campaigned, and that's who we are. Thank you. –bo”

That’s how US President Barack Obama reacted on Twitter after news began pouring in about his victory in elections this morning.

Obama now becomes only the second Democrat to win a second four-year White House term since the Second World War. With a clutch of swing states, including Florida and Virginia still to be declared, Obama already had 275 electoral votes, more than the 270 needed for the White House and looked set for a comfortable victory, when he sent out the tweet to his 22 million followers, according to AFP.

By 11.30 am Indian time, AP was reporting a landslide, adding Virginia to Obama’s sharply rising kitty, making it 303 electoral college votes without results from Florida, supposed to be a key state, still to come in.

But it was all over within a couple of hours, as Republican rival Mitt Romney made the made the customary congratulatory call to Obama around 11.30 IST.

Taking the stage at Boston within minutes, Romney conceded defeat: "This is a time of great challenges for America and I pray that the president is successful in guiding our nation… I believe in America. I believe in the people of America."
