Cauvery water: Tamil Nadu files fresh petition against Karnataka in SC

GN Bureau | June 25, 2013

In a fresh petition filed with supreme court, the Tamil Nadu government has sought 10 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) water immediately from Karnataka.

The petition has also pleaded that the apex court should immediately direct the Centre to set up the Cauvery management board and the Cauvery water regulatory committee.

According to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka has received 26 TMC water in the last 10 days. Tamil Nadu’s proportionate share of 10 TMC should be released immediately, the petition says.

Tamil Nadu is also filing a separate contempt petition against Karnataka over what it calls contempt of court over the Cauvery supervisory committee. According to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka’s contention that the committee has no powers amounts to contempt of the supreme court.

While Karnataka claims the committee cannot assume the Cauvery management board's powers, constitution of the board is mandated in the Cauvery tribunal's final order. Karnataka has filed a petition in supreme court against setting up of the board.

According to sources, the contempt petition against Karnataka would be filed today.
