Civil society activists on Thursday held a candle light vigil here to protest against the death of a woman who was found hanging in her in-laws' house on the Srinagar's outskirts last month.

Demanding justice for Shazia Majeed, a gold medallist from Kashmir University, her father alleged that his son-in- law had physically and mentally abused her for several years, after which she was found dead at her marital house in Bagh-e-Mehtab area of the city.

The death of the young woman came a day ahead of Idd-uz Zoha on November 6.

Majeed demanded that police should "thoroughly investigate" the case to find if his daughter was murdered.

"May be it is a murder... if it is a suicide all those who abetted it should be booked," he said as scores of civil society activists and family members lit candles in memory of Shazia.

"The objective of the protest is to raise concern about the growing number of domestic violence cases in the state," Advocate Nadeem Qadri, one of the protest organisers, said.
