Chavan, Jameer's homes wasting water?

RTI application finds their homes have faulty meters

GN Bureau | January 27, 2010

Mumbai: The water meters at the official residences of Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Kumar Chavan and Governor S.C. Jameer are faulty, it has been revealed  following an RTI application.

Sawdheen Kshatriya, Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, lives at an un-metered house. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) revealed the information as reply to the RTI application filed by Chetan Kothari.

In December 2009 Kothari filed the RTI application in the civic agency asking how many gallons/liters of water was supplied to the bungalows of the chief minister, governor and BMC municipal commissioner in a month. The application also asked that what percentage of water supply was cut in the city’s hospitals during water cut.

The reply dated December 23, 2009 said that the exact consumption at the residences of Chavan and Jameer could not be determined as both the meters there were faulty.

According to the reply, 30 percent of the water supply of the city’s hospitals is cut during water shortage.

“A common man in Mumbai runs from pillar to post to get water. I wanted to find out what was happening on the water supply front,” said Kothari.
