Activists propose RTI council

Pune RTI activist's murder leads to debate

GN Bureau | January 27, 2010

Pune: Right to Information activists in Pune have proposed the formation of an RTI council that can put in public domain 'sensitive' information obtained by using the Act.

Satish Shetty, an RTI activist, was murdered on January 13 near his residence in Talegaoan, on the outskirts of Pune.

Using the RTI Act, Shetty had exposed a number of land scams in Talegaon Dabhade, Lonavla, Pimpri and Chinchwad.

Around 100 activists held a meeting on January 25 to discuss issues related to Shetty’s death and the future course of action. Social activists Vivek Velankar of Sajag Nagrik Manch, Vijay Kumbhar of Surajya Sangharsha Samiti and Maruti Bhapkar attended the meeting.

If such an RTI council is set up, the RTI applications filed by an individual and the responses received can be put on a website or be shared by activists through the internet.

“Ten volunteers have agreed to be a part of the council," he said. "They are from Pune. There is a potential of it becoming a national council,” said Krishna Raj Rao, an RTI activist from Mumbai.

The activists have also demanded the formation of a Whistleblower Protection Act to give protection to activists.
