Delhi proposes to have 2011 as Digital Year

Government in process to finalise state IT Act

Installation of over 50 cameras of 5-km range on rooftops of multi-storeyed buildings to curb crimes and unauthorised constructions is being planned by the Information Technology Department of Delhi government which today also got a nod to finalise an IT Act for the city.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit gave green signal to a proposal relating to finalisation of IT Act of Delhi to enable the department to function as a nodal agency and bring uniformity in IT-related projects being implemented by various departments and other government agencies, officials said.

At a meeting in Delhi Secretariat, she was given a presentation by IT Secretary Savitur Prasad in presence of Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, Principal Secretary to CM P K Tripathi and other senior officers.

"The IT Department is gearing up to meet new challenges with an aim to creating e-citizen, e-governance, e-commerce and an e-Delhi," officials said adding, it may also declare 2011 as 'Digital Delhi Year'.

One of its projects relates to keeping a close eye on the entire Delhi with installation of more than 50 mega cameras on rooftops of multi-storeyed buildings, they said.

The cameras will have a range of five kms to capture all such activities which may deserve immediate action by the authorities to curb crimes, unauthorised constructions, disruptive activities including terrorist attacks as well as natural disasters which call for immediate response.

The input provided by the mega cameras will be of much use for police, Revenue Department, Disaster Management Authority, Delhi Fire Service and broadcasters.

The IT department also aims at computerising all departments and overhaul work culture.
